SWEET MOMENTS - MARVELS OF NATURE

We’ll drive to a reindeer farm where the reindeer herder will join us. He knows where reindeer will be found. He’ll take us to the reindeer fence place which might situate differently depending on the year. Sometimes we need to walk a couple of kilometres but sometimes we might reach the place by car.

Reindeer calves are born in May. Female reindeer are collected to the fence for giving birth. It is busy time for reindeer herders and sometimes working days last late to evening or even over the night. No worries, nights in May are long and light; it is the nightless night, midsummer time! Anyway, it may be chilly at nights… Cup of coffee or tea by open fire will keep us warm and we can taste dried reindeer meat. We can watch the herders doing their work with reindeer and they might sometimes ask us to help them. But mainly we can just enjoy watching this hundreds of years of tradition.

By evening we’ll prepare our camp by open fire and a lean-to, our shelter. The first reindeer calves might already have been born and they are taking careful first steps with their weak legs while their mothers are watching them. The wilderness is full of marvels of nature! And reindeer herders guarantee safety as well by staying wake at nights. This way the king of the woods, bear, cannot disturb newborn calves. Tasty dinner will be eaten by open fire with numerous stories of Lapland. You might not want to sleep at all but wonder the marvels of nature. Sleeping by open fire in a warm sleeping bag on reindeer skins in fresh air is definitely a unique experience!

Day is young in early morning and it is time for coffee. Our reindeer man will tell us how many newborn calves there is and then it is time to start the tasks of the day. Depending on the schedule and weather there are more newborn calves, the programme continues by returning back or marking the calves. The reindeer man will show his personal reindeer mark and tell about the marking system. Maybe you might get your own mark as well. And of course, the reindeer man will teach the traditional skill Lappish lasso casting.

The itinerary can be decided to start either from morning and return back next morning. Or start from early evening and return back next evening. Programme duration is 20-24 hours depending on the place of the reindeer fence and the herding work to be done.

PROGRAMME VALID: Reindeer calves are born usually May – first week of June.
GROUP SIZE: 1-4 persons (note, bigger groups not possible at same time, if bigger split into 2)
